The best of the week - 30th Jan

New Prosecco!

There are some good deals to be had this week, in the run up to Valentine's Day, all of which are under the deals tab.  There is a new Prosecco in Morrisons this week, with a launch offer - £9.99, usual price £11.99.  It's all very romantic, with the inspiration for the label coming from the "3000 love messages a day received from every corner of the world, any religion, any culture trapped for ever in one single frame: Romeo and Juliet's wall."

Asda 2 for £10

A great deal has appeared from Asda this week - you will expect to pay £8.25 a bottle on the Fillipo Sansovino Prosecco 75cl, or you can grab 2 for £10 - absolute bargain!

2 Great Magnum Deals

....and finally, we have not one but two magnums on offer this week (the first time since Christmas)!

Sainsbury's are selling their Conegliano Prosecco, Taste the Difference 150cl for £14.50, reduced from £20.  This is my favourite Prosecco, it's crisp, fruity, and not too dry.  I will be stocking up on this one!

Morrisons also have the magnum back on offer that caused chaos at Christmas!  The reduction is not as strong as the Christmas promotion where it was reduced to £10, but its now £13.99 reduced from £18.99!

Enjoy!

What Is Prosecco?

13/1/2015

I thought I would write a blog today about what exactly Prosecco is - I've had a few questions about it on the Facebook page, so thought I would share with you all.

It is advised that Prosecco is drunk young, ideally within two years of bottling to be enjoyed at it's best,

Unlike champagne, Prosecco is fermented once, in large tanks, using what is called the Charmat method.   This helps create the lovely fruity taste and aromas we love.  Champagne is fermented twice, the second time in the bottle.

The Grapes

The Prosecco grape has officially been renamed Glera, its ancient name.
Only winemakers in the Prosecco Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC), consisting of nine provinces in northeastern Italy, can call their wines Prosecco.
The very best stuff comes from the even smaller and stricter Denominazione di Origine Controllata Garantita (DOCG) of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene, which has the exclusive right to label its wines Prosecco Superiore.

What do the classifications mean?

Prosecco labeled spumante is better quality than the semi-sparkling frizzante, which is not fermented as long.

The classifications are below -

DRY - has the highest sugar content—about 20 to 35 grams per litre
EXTRA DRY - about 12 to 20 grams of sugar per litre
BRUT -  the driest with 6 to 12g of suger per litre

Extra Dry is the Prosecco most used in cocktails.

Fizzy Stopper Update!

8/1/2015

The results are in!  I've used this stopper twice now since the original post, and I can confirm the stopper has worked!  The first time, the stopper was used over 2 nights (yes I know) and the fizz remained, if not slightly less by day 3.  Last night I used it again, and this evening, removed the stopper to a hear a satisfying "pffffttt"!  On sampling, I can confirm, it is as fizzy as last night.

So - I would recommend using this overnight, and at a push for two nights, but really, does anyone have a bottle of Prosecco that lasts that long?!!

Fizzy Stopper!

2/1/2015

After the "how to keep a magnum overnight" dilemma, I bought a little fizzy wine stopper this afternoon in Sainsbury's.  Now if I'm honest, I'm a little concerned this won't actually get used that much as a standard 75cl bottle does not last overnight in our house once opened.  I do however, have a couple of the Morrisons magnums in the cupboard (I bought 6 at Christmas) so I intend to try it out on them.  Last one we opened was left outside the back door with a spoon in the top.  There have been discussions around whether this does actually work in our house (I say no, he says yes), but I have to admit, the Prosecco was still fizzy.  Reading up on this, apparently the key to keeping your Prosecco with it's pizzazz is to keep it as cold as possible (and not a spoon)!  I will let you know how I get on with the stopper tomorrow......
