Mionetto Review

27/8/2015

I recently got sent this a bottle of Mionetto Extra Dry DOCG to sample and review.

I've tried a couple of their other Prosecco's (which I really liked), so was keen to give this one a go, and the Mionetto Prestige DOC (currently available and on offer in Tesco) is delicious!

This Prosecco has a beautiful straw yellow colour, and smells like the spring, reminding me of apples and blossom.  The flavour is light, fruity, almost pear like,  and I have to say, very easy to drink.  This is a Prosecco I would happily drink by itself to really savour the flavours, but it would work well with chicken or fish dishes too.

I have to say that Mionetto Prosecco's are becoming one of my favourites.

A triple pack has just been launched on Amazon, which includes both the Prestige DOC Brut and DOCG Extra Dry.

Prosecco Outsells Champagne (As If We Didn't Know Already)!

27/8/2015

Figures released yesterday are showing that Prosecco has racked up greater sales than Champagne in the UK for the first time ever.  This comes as no surprise to us here at Prosecco Watch, maybe we've even helped it happen!

The value of Prosecco sales in the UK over the past 12 months totalled £338.6m, which was an increase of 72% on last year.

Champagne sales value only reached £250m, a tiny jump of 1.2%, while cava sales actually dropped 11% to £18.6m.

The increase in Prosecco sales is estimated to have added £142m in value to the British grocery sector over the past year.

But while the triumph in sales value is new for Prosecco, it has had the lead over Champagne in terms of litres sold for the past several years.

The analysis by Information Resources, Inc (IRI) shows 37.3 million litres of prosecco sold in the past 12 months compared to 9.8 million litres of champagne and 2 million litres of cava, making it the top seller for the third year running.

The IRI research is based on actual sales of products across the UK’s supermarkets, off-licences and independent shops in the 12 months to the 18 July 2015.

Toby Magill, Head of Beer, Wine and Spirits Insights at IRI, said: "Prosecco is a fashionable drink that provides a cheaper and excellent quality alternative to Champagne.

"It's no wonder that it now outpaces Champagne in value and volume and is being chosen above Champagne at weddings.

"It's quickly becoming the nation's summer drink of choice."

Prosecco Watch couldn't agree more!

Aperol Ice Lollies

Who doesn't like an ice lolly?  Memories of hot sunny carefree days, when the only thing that mattered was what time you had to be in.

These days I am quite partial to an alcoholic lolly.  Cooling, tasty and a nice little hit of Prosecco and Aperol in these make me almost believe I am in Italy!

If you add straws instead of lolly sticks, these are fantastic served in a glass, as you can sip as they melt - or even pour some Prosecco over the top!

Ingredients

SERVES 4
  • 2 large oranges, or 150ml of fresh orange juice
  • 2 tbsp. caster sugar
  • 3 tbsp. Aperol or Campari
  • 3 tbsp. prosecco
  • Ice Lolly Moulds
  • Plastic straws (optional)

Method

Squeeze the oranges, or pour out 150ml of fresh orange juice into a bowl.
Heat the sugar with 1 tablespoon of water until it has dissolved.  Add to  the bowl, along with the Aperol and Prosecco.
Add some of the zest from the orange if you wish
Pour into four moulds and freeze
You can add straws instead of lolly sticks if you wish, then serve in a glass and slurp as they melt!

Enjoy!
