The value of Prosecco sales in the UK over the past 12 months totalled £338.6m, which was an increase of 72% on last year.
Champagne sales value only reached £250m, a tiny jump of 1.2%, while cava sales actually dropped 11% to £18.6m.
The increase in Prosecco sales is estimated to have added £142m in value to the British grocery sector over the past year.
But while the triumph in sales value is new for Prosecco, it has had the lead over Champagne in terms of litres sold for the past several years.
The analysis by Information Resources, Inc (IRI) shows 37.3 million litres of prosecco sold in the past 12 months compared to 9.8 million litres of champagne and 2 million litres of cava, making it the top seller for the third year running.
The IRI research is based on actual sales of products across the UK’s supermarkets, off-licences and independent shops in the 12 months to the 18 July 2015.
Toby Magill, Head of Beer, Wine and Spirits Insights at IRI, said: "Prosecco is a fashionable drink that provides a cheaper and excellent quality alternative to Champagne.
"It's no wonder that it now outpaces Champagne in value and volume and is being chosen above Champagne at weddings.
"It's quickly becoming the nation's summer drink of choice."
